Why Don’t People Learn CPR? Addressing the Misconceptions
CPR is a life-saving skill that is essential to making our communities safe. Yet, despite its importance, many people hesitate to learn CPR. Let's explore some common reasons why people avoid learning CPR and debunk them one by one.
“I won’t need to use it, this would never happen to me”
Since starting my initiative in 2022, I've heard this sentiment countless times. Though I wish this was true, the fact is sudden cardiac arrest could happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. In fact, 4 out of 5 cardiac arrests happen in the home, meaning it's of the utmost importance that you are prepared for the ones you love.
2. “I’m afraid of doing harm. What if I get sued?”
You cannot hurt someone in cardiac arrest more by performing CPR; you can only help. If no action is taken the sudden cardiac arrest will surely be fatal. Effective and immediate bystander CPR can up to triple the chances of survival! Thanks to Good Samaritan laws, you are protected and don’t have to worry about any legal repercussions.
3. “Its too complicated and I don't have time to learn”
While I absolutely love a full in person training course, it’s understandable that people lead busy lives and struggle to find the time to go to one. Luckily, there are free online training courses and quick 5 minute videos that give you all the knowledge you need to be prepared for an emergency. Head to the ‘Learn’ section of my website to find simple, instructional videos.
4. “I don’t want to get a disease or do mouth to mouth on a stranger”
What an understandable reason for hesitation! I wouldn't want to do mouth to mouth on a stranger either. Thankfully, hands-only CPR is the recommended action for bystanders. All you need to do is call 911 and start chest compressions, that's it!
I believe there is power and safety in knowledge. I hope that by clearing up these misconceptions and fears, those who held them have a new sense of comfort. By each of us doing our part to learn, we can create safe communities full of individuals who are empowered to stand up in an emergency. CPR saves lives. Are you ready?
